Black & white, static graphics used in Solar Energy International's Photovoltaics : Design and Installation Manual. A grid tied, photovoltaic system with battery back up is complex, with mutiple routes and controls in place to handle the flow of energy. While the above static graphics are correct, it misses the opportunity to elaborate on the placement and use of breakers in a system. Understanding the use and logic behind breaker placement provides a real world learning situation, giving 'hands on' experience for system installation and troubleshooting.

Instead of dry, static images that leave much for the viewer to figure out for themselves, color and motion bring a deeper and more complete understanding of the information being conveyed. This sample shows the viewer what is actually going on, where the energy is flowing, and demonstrates concepts relating to isolating various parts of the system for maintenance and trouble shooting. This graphic can easily be displayed online, via an instructor's laptop in class, or incorporated into a CD-ROM.
